In this essay, I follow predatory fleas, sterile flies, and other insects, as well farmers, across the Arava/Arabah, an arid desert region in southern Israel/Palestine, south of Dead Sea, marked by harsh environmental conditions. Following a four-year ethnographic study, examine ecological political impacts Zionist settlement area fluidity definitions alien/native species. use term agricultural infrastructure to describe network connections that make agriculture possible—wells, pipes, “beneficial” insects—as part theoretical framework integrates both human non-human Anthropocene era, while also examining challenges posed transformation. Agricultural is shown piece enterprise: it establishes hierarchical boundaries between communities strengthens land control maintaining establishing humans non-humans, often resulting compounding harm. Yet within given context settler colonialism contributes more nuanced approach than dichotomous contrasts alien versus native, local.

Fleas are wingless, brown, bloodsucking insects that may infest dogs and cats, and other warmblooded animals. Fleas transmit several diseases (for example, plague) and parasites such as tapeworms. Young animals heavily infested with fleas may die from severe blood loss. Fleas prefer certain species of animals but will attack any source of blood if the preferred animal is not available. The cat ...

Factory Tsetse Flies Must Behave Like Wild Flies: A Prerequisite for the Sterile Insect Technique

Tsetse flies are the vectors of human and animal African trypanosomoses, the former a major neglected disease, and the latter considered among the greatest constraints to livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa. To date, the disease is mainly contained through the prophylactic and curative treatment of livestock with trypanocidal drugs, which is not sustainable. The removal of the vector, th...

Age-dependent variation in mating success of sterile male Mediterranean fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae): implications for sterile insect technique.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is widely used in integrated programs against the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae). Unfortunately, the mass-rearing procedures inherent to the SIT often lead to a reduction in the mating ability of the released males. To counter this deficiency, SIT programs rely upon the production and release of large numbers of ...

The Sterile Insect Technique for Control of Tsetse Flies in Africa

Programmes are under way to free Africa of the disease either by developing new drugs and prophylactics or by massive control and eradication of the tsetse fly. The increasing concern that trypanosomiasis is preventing social and economic development in many countries has led to the Joint FAO/WHO Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Control Programme. This was officially launched in November 1974. It is ...
